Scenarios/01

Work

Build one skills bridge

Employers in the 21 October edition are already missing people in work AI cannot do, while candidates stack up against jobs that ask for qualifications adjacent workers do not hold. The organization note says the chart has to change after the task list does.

What the industry is already doing

  • Trades are retiring out of roles the model will not cover, and the work is seen as less prestigious than it pays.
  • Hybrid roles are appearing outside tech. Data-center field work is priced well above other postings.
  • About one in seven workers who may need to leave a declining occupation by 2035 has a direct route. Credentials block many of the rest.

Mindset expected

Pathway builder, with curiosity about what the person thinks they will lose by moving. A posting is the old move.

What to push this quarter

  1. 1Name one from-role and one to-role inside the company.
  2. 2List the requirement that blocks people who already have the adjacent skill. Remove it or defend it in writing.
  3. 3Pair the move with a manager who will not treat the transfer as a demotion.

Influence

The operator who owns the unfilled role, the CHRO, and the person who writes the qualification rule.

“We are not short of a job. We are short of a route, and the rule in the posting is the thing blocking it.”

The decision to ask for

Approve one pathway this quarter, with the blocking requirement decided in the same meeting.

How it stalls

A skills framework, a campaign about the dignity of the trades, and no change to the posting. The revenue stays on the table.
